When pets shed treated skin cells, urine, and feces, these compounds enter waterways and soil, where they accumulate in ways regulators did not previously model.

Studies document populations of aquatic invertebrates declining sharply near areas with high pet ownership. Aquatic insects form the base of food webs that support fish, amphibians, and birds. A reduction in these organisms cascades through ecosystems. Additionally, some flea treatments persist in the environment longer than manufacturers initially claimed, creating cumulative exposure risks over time.

The gap between pet safety testing and environmental assessment is stark. Regulatory agencies evaluate flea treatments primarily for direct toxicity to target animals and household members.
