# Ancient DNA Reveals Neanderthals May Have Been More Into Bug-Eating Than Modern Humans

Researchers examining ancient teeth and human DNA discovered patterns indicating modern humans in northern Eurasia consumed insects only sporadically, while Neanderthals likely incorporated insects into their regular diet. The researchers compared microscopic abrasion marks and damage patterns on teeth from Neanderthals and early modern humans, finding signatures consistent with regular insect consumption in Neanderthal specimens. Modern human teeth from the same archaeological periods showed less evidence of this dietary pattern.

The timeline points to divergence roughly 9,000 years ago, when populations occupying different climatic zones underwent dietary specialization. As modern humans in cooler northern regions increasingly relied on hunting large game and gathering seasonal plant foods, their genetic toolkit for processing insects atrophied. Meanwhile, tropical populations maintained genes optimizing chitin digestion, reflecting their continued reliance on insects as a protein source.

This genetic differentiation has practical implications today. Populations descended from tropical insect-eaters possess genetic advantages in digesting insects more efficiently. Conversely, people from northern European ancestry show less efficiency in this process, which may partly explain cultural aversions to insect consumption in Western societies.

The research adds texture to our understanding of hominin dietary flexibility. Neanderthals, often portrayed as brutish hunter-killers, apparently engaged in opportunistic foraging and consumed available insects without hesitation. Modern humans, despite being cognitively superior in many respects, actually narrowed their diet in temperate zones, potentially missing a reliable protein source.

The findings carry relevance for addressing modern food security. As insect farming scales globally to meet protein demands for growing populations, understanding human genetic capacity for insect digestion becomes relevant. Populations with ancestral insect-eating traditions and retained digestive genes may transition more comfortably to insect-based foods, while others may require cultural adjustment periods.

The research raises questions about how human migration and climate shaped both our genes and food preferences over millennia. It demonstrates that dietary aversion is not universal or immutable, but rather a product of evolutionary history tailored to specific environments. What feels instinctively repulsive to modern Western palates reflects specific ancestral choices, not inherent human nature.
