# Scientists Locate First Marbled Murrelet Nest on Haida Gwaii After Three Decades
A research team has discovered the first confirmed marbled murrelet nest on Haida Gwaii in over 30 years, marking a rare success in tracking one of Canada's most elusive seabirds. The nest, found in the dense old-growth forest of northern Haida Gwaii, represents a potential turning point in conservation efforts for a species that has declined sharply across its range.
Marbled murrelets present one of the most difficult challenges in North American ornithology. These small seabirds spend their days at sea hunting fish but return to land only to nest, and they select nesting sites in the highest branches of old-growth conifers, often 50 meters or higher. Their secretive behavior and remote nesting locations have made population monitoring nearly impossible. The species exists in two distinct populations. The western population, found from California through British Columbia and Alaska, faces severe decline from habitat loss and changes in ocean conditions that affect their food supply.
The discovery on Haida Gwaii comes after researchers combined unconventional survey methods to pinpoint the bird's presence. The team conducted dawn surveys from open skiffs in Dixon Entrance, the marine channel separating Haida Gwaii from the mainland, to detect calling birds. Once they confirmed murrelets in the area, they intensified ground searches through the archipelago's temperate rainforest, navigating dense understory vegetation and towering western red cedars to locate nesting sites.
This approach reflects the adaptive strategies conservationists employ when traditional methods fail. Standard murrelet surveys rely on nighttime audio recordings and helicopter-based thermal imaging, but these techniques often miss nesting birds entirely. The successful discovery suggests that combining maritime and terrestrial survey work yields better results for this species.
Haida Gwaii itself holds particular conservation importance. The archipelago contains some of the largest remaining intact temperate rainforests in North America, habitat essential for marbled murrelets and dozens of other species. However, logging, climate change, and shifting marine ecosystems continue to threaten both the forest and the birds that depend on it.
The researchers' work occurs against a backdrop of alarming population trends. Marbled murrelet populations have contracted by roughly 90 percent since the 1980s across much of their range. In Canada, the species remains listed under the Species at Risk Act, and recovery efforts have produced few documented successes. Each confirmed nest becomes valuable data, both for understanding where remaining birds persist and for evaluating whether habitat protection measures work.
The discovery does not guarantee population recovery. A single nest, while encouraging, represents only a small fraction of the breeding effort needed to stabilize populations. Researchers must determine whether this nesting pair indicates a stable breeding population or represents isolated survivors. Continued monitoring of this site and systematic searches for additional nests will provide critical context.
The team's methods also suggest new directions for murrelet research elsewhere. As traditional approaches prove inadequate, combining marine and forest surveys may become standard practice for tracking this and other cryptic seabirds.
