Measles cases in children worldwide have been climbing since 2020, reversing decades of decline, according to a global study published in Nature Medicine. The study, by the GBD 2023 Measles Collaborators, found that nearly 16 million children under age five contracted measles in 2023, with 118,000 deaths.

The article notes that children in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa receive two doses of measles vaccine at lower rates than children in other parts of the world.
