We have a problem in tech reporting, and it starts with our addiction to apocalypse.

Every few months, someone with a megaphone announces that artificial intelligence has achieved something "beyond human intuition" or that we've crossed some invisible threshold into a new era. The headlines pile up. The breathlessness intensifies. And somewhere in a lab, actual scientists are just trying to solve actual problems.

Let me be direct: the winners in this technology cycle won't be the ones adding another layer of hype to an already suffocating narrative. They'll be the operators who can strip away the noise and ask a simple question: does this actually work, and does it solve something real?

Look at what's actually happening in materials science, biotech, and chip design. Real progress is unglamorous. It's materials researchers using AI to mine literature faster and identify heat-stable compounds. It's workflow engineers eliminating sample preparation steps. It's chip designers creating components at scales that would have seemed impossible five years ago. None of this requires us to invoke the singularity or pretend we're living in a science fiction novel.

But here's where the incentives get twisted. A researcher who publishes "we incrementally improved efficiency in multiomics processing" gets ignored. A startup founder who claims their system operates "beyond human intuition" gets funded, covered, and celebrated. The language of transcendence sells. The language of competence doesn't.

This creates a marketplace where exaggeration becomes rational. If your competitor is claiming their AI reads minds and yours merely reads data faster, you look boring by comparison. The pressure to mythologize is relentless.

The practical cost of this is substantial. When every announcement is positioned as a watershed moment, real signal gets buried in noise. Investors chase hype instead of fundamentals. Companies build on shaky ground because they're too busy marketing miracles to focus on making things work reliably.

Consider what happens when the inevitable disappointment arrives. A system doesn't perform as advertised. A breakthrough doesn't scale. Reality fails to match the narrative. The entire sector takes credibility damage. The people who suffer most? The serious operators doing methodical, rigorous work.

I'm not arguing that transformative technologies don't exist. The capability leaps in certain domains have been real and significant. But transformation and transcendence aren't the same thing. A technology can be genuinely useful without being apocalyptic. It can be remarkable without being world-ending.

The operators who will actually shape the next decade are the ones asking boring questions. How do we make this reliable? How do we make this energy-efficient? How do we integrate this into existing infrastructure without requiring everyone to reimagine civilization? These questions don't generate viral tweets, but they generate products that work.

Meanwhile, the singularity talk creates a convenient escape hatch. If we're at or beyond the singularity, if we've achieved something beyond human understanding, then nobody has to be accountable for outcomes anymore. It's not a product with tradeoffs. It's a historical force. It's destiny. It's beyond critique.

That's not sophisticated thinking. It's the opposite.

Real innovation requires skepticism, not faith. It requires asking what's actually been demonstrated versus what's been claimed. It requires recognizing the difference between impressive capability and fundamental transformation.

The companies and researchers who win in this space won't be the ones with the biggest claims. They'll be the ones with the clearest heads, the steadiest hands, and the willingness to do something unglamorous: building something that actually works, over and over again.

The singularity can wait. We have simpler problems to solve first.
