Here's the unpopular take: restraint, not speed, may be the smarter strategy here.
We live in an era of technological velocity that would have seemed impossible a generation ago. Artificial intelligence capabilities are advancing so rapidly that regulators, ethicists, and industry observers are understandably anxious. The instinct to act quickly, to put guardrails in place before something goes wrong, feels not just reasonable but morally imperative.
Yet I'd argue that this instinct, however well-intentioned, could backfire in ways we're not fully considering.
The problem isn't that we shouldn't regulate AI. We absolutely should. The problem is the timeline. When policymakers rush to codify rules around technology they don't yet fully understand, they risk locking in place frameworks that become obsolete within years, or worse, that inadvertently stifle beneficial applications while missing genuine risks.
Consider the regulatory landscape for emerging technologies historically. Environmental regulations written in the 1970s sometimes reflected incomplete scientific knowledge. Financial regulations crafted after 2008 sometimes targeted yesterday's crisis while missing tomorrow's. The cost of getting it wrong extends far beyond the regulatory text itself. It shapes investment decisions, research directions, and which companies survive to scale their innovations.
The current AI moment feels different because the stakes feel higher. These tools might reshape labor, education, healthcare, scientific research itself. That scale makes the impulse to move quickly even stronger. But precisely because the stakes are so high, moving hastily could do serious damage.
What would restraint actually look like? It means governments taking time to study how AI systems actually behave in real-world deployment. It means letting the technology develop enough that we can make informed decisions rather than educated guesses. It means encouraging industry self-regulation and transparency as intermediate steps while researchers and policymakers genuinely understand what they're dealing with.
This isn't an argument for a regulatory vacuum. Transparency requirements, safety testing standards, and liability frameworks can develop on reasonable timelines. Academic research into AI risks can accelerate. Industry best practices can evolve. These don't require rushing into comprehensive legislation.
The recent headlines about breakthrough discoveries across multiple fields highlight something important: science moves at different speeds. We're learning that Neanderthals roamed further than we thought. We're discovering that dark matter might shape supermassive black holes in unexpected ways. We're still debating fundamental questions about human biology and behavior. These aren't failures of science. They're reminders that understanding complex systems takes time.
AI systems are genuinely complex. We don't fully understand how they learn, why they fail in certain ways, or how to measure their long-term impacts reliably. Rushing to regulate something we don't fully understand invites two failures simultaneously: rules that don't work as intended, and missed opportunities for beneficial applications that regulators prematurely discouraged.
This doesn't mean waiting for perfect information. Perfect will never arrive. But there's a difference between acting with incomplete information and acting with information so preliminary that you're essentially guessing.
The counterargument is that waiting creates risks. Absolutely true. Every month of delay carries potential costs. But the counterargument to that is also true: every month of premature regulation carries different costs, ones we might not recognize until they're locked into law.
Restraint in this context doesn't mean inaction. It means distinguishing between urgent problems that need immediate regulatory response and complex questions that deserve deeper investigation first.
That's not popular advice in a moment when everyone feels the pressure to do something. But smart strategy often means doing less faster, not more slowly.
