We've heard the narrative so many times it's become background noise: science has a reproducibility problem, it's systemic and structural, and honestly, what can you do? The story goes that labs are understaffed, journals prioritize novelty over rigor, and career pressures make shortcuts inevitable. So we've learned to live with it. We've absorbed it as the cost of doing business in modern research.

This resigned acceptance is the real problem.

Don't misunderstand. The replication crisis is genuine. Studies showing that many published findings can't be reproduced in subsequent experiments have upended confidence in everything from psychology to biomedicine. The structural incentives are real too: tenure committees reward publications, not reproducibility; journals get more attention from surprising results than confirmatory ones; grant funding favors the novel over the verified. These aren't myths invented by cynics.

But the fact that a problem has structural roots doesn't make it unsolvable. It makes it harder to solve, yes. It requires systemic change, absolutely. But there's a crucial difference between "this is difficult" and "this is inevitable," and too much contemporary discussion of the replication crisis has collapsed that distinction.

The resignation serves everyone badly. It lets institutions off the hook because, well, the system is broken at a level nobody controls. It demoralizes researchers who want to do careful work but feel the deck is stacked against them. And it undermines public trust in science because if scientists themselves treat reproducibility as an acceptable casualty of ambition, why should anyone else care?

Some solutions actually exist and don't require overturning everything. Preregistration, where researchers specify their methods and hypotheses before collecting data, addresses one major source of false positives. It's not perfect, but the evidence suggests it works. Open data policies make verification easier. Funding agencies could weight replication studies equally with original research for grant purposes. These aren't revolutionary ideas. They're mostly just logistical preferences that favor accuracy over hype.

The harder part isn't identifying solutions. It's getting institutions to implement them when the current system rewards people who don't. Here's where the resignation really costs us. When we tell ourselves the problem is structural and therefore unsolvable, we give ourselves permission to stop pushing for the structural changes that would actually help.

Individual labs can't fix everything alone. But they can choose to preregister studies. They can share data. They can replicate their own findings before submitting for publication. Early-career researchers can build reputations on careful work even in a system that doesn't reward it as much as it should. Slowly, this shifts incentives.

The replication crisis will not be solved by individual virtue alone. But it also won't be solved by collective resignation. It requires both: individuals making different choices within a system that needs to change, alongside pressure on institutions to change the system itself.

What's being sold as inevitable right now is a particular kind of helplessness: the idea that because the incentives are broken, we're all stuck. But incentives can be rewired. They can be rewired slowly, unevenly, imperfectly. But they can be.

The interesting question isn't whether reproducibility matters or whether the system is broken. Everyone agrees on both counts. The interesting question is why we've decided to live with it when the solutions are actually available. That's worth more than resignation.
