The condition stems from heightened neurobiological sensitivity to hormone shifts rather than psychological vulnerability. Women with ADHD report that menstrual cycle phases, pregnancy, and menopause intensify their core symptoms—executive dysfunction, emotional dysregulation, and impulsivity—far beyond what non-ADHD women experience during similar hormonal transitions.

Research shows that estrogen influences dopamine and noradrenaline systems in the brain. Women with ADHD appear to have atypical sensitivity to these neurochemical changes. When estrogen levels drop during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, some women report their ADHD symptoms become acutely worse, creating a cyclical pattern of functional impairment that many describe as feeling "controlled" by their bodies.

Psychiatrists now incorporate hormone-awareness strategies into treatment. These include tracking symptom patterns against menstrual cycles, adjusting medication timing or dosage during high-sensitivity phases, and using hormonal contraceptives to stabilize hormone levels where appropriate.
