Every few weeks, we get another headline about lunar ambitions. China maps new territory. NASA prepares its next crewed mission. Private companies announce timelines that seem to compress years into months. The underlying message is always the same: we must move fast, build faster, get there first.
But what if the most consequential thing we could do right now is pump the brakes?
I'm not arguing against space exploration. The science is crucial. The technological spillovers are real. The inspiration matters. But we're operating as though the moon is somehow disappearing, as though the window of opportunity closes if we don't establish a permanent presence by 2025 or 2026 or whenever the latest roadmap promises.
It won't.
The moon has been there for 4.5 billion years. It will be there in 2035. It will be there in 2050. Speed advocates might bristle at this observation, but it's worth asking: what are we actually racing against? The answer often boils down to geopolitical prestige and the fear that someone else will get there first and claim some imagined advantage.
This mindset has real costs that deserve scrutiny.
When speed becomes the primary metric, other things get deprioritized. Safety protocols get compressed. Timelines become political rather than engineering-driven. We skip the incremental testing phases that historically have prevented catastrophes. The Artemis program has already experienced delays and cost overruns partly because rushing complex systems is, well, complicated.
There's also the question of sustainability. A sprint mentality burns out equipment, personnel, and budgets. We've seen this pattern before in space programs. Early enthusiasm gives way to fatigue and political priorities shift. What we should want instead is a steady cadence that can persist across administrations, funding cycles, and public attention spans. That's not flashy. It's not a winning move in the competition for tomorrow's news cycle. But it's how you actually build something that lasts.
The current rush also obscures harder questions we haven't adequately answered. What exactly are we doing on the moon? Are we mining resources? Conducting science? Establishing a staging ground for Mars? Different objectives require different approaches, timelines, and levels of risk tolerance. Yet these conversations often take a backseat to the velocity metrics.
There's also an environmental angle that rarely gets discussed in space coverage. Increasing launch cadence has real atmospheric and ground-based impacts. We're not thinking seriously enough about the environmental costs of a space program moving at maximum velocity, with all the fuel consumption, hardware production, and launch infrastructure that entails.
None of this means we should abandon lunar exploration. Rather, it means we should untangle our emotional relationship with speed from our strategic thinking about space.
China's new moon mapping efforts signal genuine commitment to lunar presence. NASA's Artemis program represents serious scientific and engineering work. These developments should inspire us to think about what we're building and why, not simply to accelerate existing timelines because someone else moved first.
The real innovation might not be getting to the moon faster. It might be going there smarter, more sustainably, and with genuine clarity about what success actually looks like beyond the symbolic moment of arrival.
The moon isn't going anywhere. Neither should our patience.
