The climate tech industry loves a good spectacle. Announcements about carbon-capture megastructures, blockchain-verified carbon credits, and AI systems that will supposedly revolutionize sustainability dominate the fundraising circuit. Meanwhile, the unsexy business of making existing infrastructure actually work better barely registers on the innovation meter.

This is backwards. The winners in climate transition won't be the companies that add another layer of complexity to an already bewildering ecosystem. They'll be the ones that simplify what we're already doing.

Consider what we know about emissions reduction. Agriculture accounts for roughly one-quarter of global emissions. Some of those come from livestock digestion—the cow burp problem that's become almost a cliche in climate conversations. But here's what rarely makes headlines: many farms still operate below basic efficiency levels. Farmers often lack real-time data about soil health, feed composition, or herd management that would help them cut emissions without sacrificing productivity. This isn't sexy. It's just necessary.

The same pattern repeats everywhere you look. Building heating and cooling represents about 10 percent of global emissions. We have the technology to make existing buildings far more efficient. What we don't have is a simple, trustworthy way for building managers to implement it. Instead, the market offers fragmented solutions, incompatible data systems, and consultants who make money by creating complexity.

Transportation networks are moving toward electrification, which is good. But we're layering new complexity on top of old infrastructure that barely talks to itself. A driver charging an electric vehicle might not know whether that electricity came from solar, wind, or natural gas. A logistics company trying to optimize routes has to juggle APIs from five different providers. These aren't problems that need a moonshot. They need someone to build the operational equivalent of a good old-fashioned thermostat.

Climate policy doesn't help. Every new regulation often brings with it a requirement for tracking, reporting, and verification systems that only certain large companies can afford to implement. This creates a moat for incumbents and makes entry difficult for anyone trying to solve the actual problem. The climate tech industry responds by building even more elaborate compliance infrastructure, which the next regulation will supersede anyway.

The smart money won't be in companies that create new dependencies or require six stakeholders to agree on standards before anyone can use them. It'll be in operations that take existing processes and make them demonstrably cheaper while lowering emissions. A farm that simply gets better data and keeps more money? That scales. A building that cuts its heating costs through better controls? That's replicable. A supply chain that becomes more efficient as a side effect of better inventory management? That's sustainable in both senses.

This doesn't mean abandoning technological innovation. It means recognizing that most emissions don't come from gaps in what we know is possible. They come from gaps between what's possible and what actually gets deployed at scale. Closing those gaps requires unglamorous work: standardization, integration, user experience design, and the kind of operational excellence that doesn't look impressive at venture capital pitch meetings.

The Atlantic can handle more warming than expected, as recent research suggests, but that's not an excuse for inaction. It's actually an argument for focusing on the solutions that work reliably rather than betting everything on the ones that sound impressive. We need fewer climate tech cathedrals and more companies willing to make the ordinary extraordinary through sheer competence.

The climate transition will happen. The question is whether we'll get there through layers of innovation theater or through operators who simply make the systems we already have actually function at their potential.
