The pitch is seductive: tiny sensors woven into fabric, continuously tracking our vital signs, feeding data into algorithms that catch health problems before we even feel sick. Recent innovations in origami-inspired sensors and flexible electronics have tech boosters imagining a world where passive monitoring becomes our baseline. This trend is being sold as inevitable. It deserves more skepticism than it is getting.
Don't misunderstand. The engineering is genuinely clever. The potential applications are real. But somewhere between the lab demonstration and the consumer product lies a gap we're not discussing seriously enough: the difference between what's technically possible and what's actually good for how we live.
The wearable health monitoring narrative assumes we should want constant surveillance of our bodies. It frames this as progress, as freedom from disease, as empowerment through data. What it doesn't adequately address is the psychological and social cost of that surveillance, or the infrastructural problems that real implementation would create.
Consider the data problem first. Continuous health monitoring generates enormous amounts of information. Someone has to store it, analyze it, and act on it. That someone is typically a tech company or healthcare system with their own incentives. The assumption that this data will be used purely for our benefit is, frankly, naive. Historical patterns suggest otherwise. Privacy risks aren't peripheral concerns; they're central to how these systems actually function in the real world.
Then there's the normalization of hypervigilance. We're already living through a mental health crisis partly driven by constant connectivity and self-monitoring culture. Wearables sold for health purposes don't reduce this burden; they legitimize and expand it. There's a meaningful difference between occasional health checks and continuous bodily surveillance, even if the data collected is theoretically the same.
The marketing also obscures a harder question: for whom is continuous monitoring actually beneficial? People with serious chronic conditions might genuinely benefit from better data streams to their healthcare providers. But the technology is being pitched as a consumer product for everyone, as though we all need to live as though we're potential medical emergencies waiting to happen.
This feeds into a broader tech industry pattern: developing solutions for problems that don't necessarily exist, then creating demand through marketing and social pressure. If everyone around you is wearing a health monitor and you're not, there's implicit shame in that choice. That's not emergence of a technology; that's manufactured inevitability.
There's also the question of what gets optimized. When sensors become ubiquitous, what metrics will matter? Heart rate variability, step counts, sleep stages, blood oxygen? The incentive structures will favor measurable outputs over actual health. We'll end up optimizing for the data we can collect rather than the health outcomes we actually care about. That's not new; it's how every metrics-driven system works. But when it's your body, the stakes feel different.
The tech industry's track record on deploying systems "for our own good" isn't inspiring. Social media platforms were supposed to connect us. Recommendation algorithms were supposed to personalize our information diet. Pattern-recognition systems were supposed to make policing more objective. In each case, the pitch involved inevitability, and in each case, the actual implementation revealed problems the inventors claimed to be surprised by.
We should be asking harder questions before wearable health monitoring becomes the assumed baseline. Who profits? Who controls the data? What happens when insurance companies want access? What does constant monitoring do to our relationship with our own bodies? What behaviors get incentivized? What happens to people who can't or won't participate?
These aren't anti-technology questions. They're pro-humanity questions. The engineering is impressive. The applications deserve serious development. But serious development means resisting the narrative that this is inevitable, that we should simply adapt to it, that skepticism equals opposition to progress.
We can have better health technologies without surrendering to the assumption that the most surveilled version is the most inevitable version.
