A growing cadre of researchers argues that humanity's search for extraterrestrial life may be blind to forms of intelligence that bypass both biology and technology. These scientists propose a third category called "noosignatures," markers of mind and intellect that exist independent of physical embodiment or mechanical advancement.
The concept challenges the traditional framework that guides the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, which focuses on either biosignatures (chemical fingerprints of life) or technosignatures (evidence of technological activity). Noosignatures represent something stranger, more abstract. They are signals of consciousness, reasoning, or cultural output that might manifest in unexpected ways.
One striking example mentioned in discussions of this framework: bread. The fermentation and baking process requires planning, experimentation, and cultural transmission. It represents intentional manipulation of biology toward a specific outcome. To some researchers, such artifacts could flag the presence of intelligent beings even if they lack advanced technology or traditional biological markers.
The reasoning extends beyond food production. Noosignatures might include patterns in radiation, deliberate mathematical sequences encoded in cosmic phenomena, or organization in matter that defies natural explanation. The framework suggests that alien intelligence might leave cognitive footprints without building spacecraft or producing the chemical signatures astrobiologists currently hunt for.
This approach expands the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) beyond its conventional targets.
