Researchers at the University of East London have identified a critical gap in air pollution science: there is virtually no direct evidence proving whether home gardens actually reduce the pollution people breathe.
The review examined existing research on domestic gardens and air quality. Domestic gardens blanket Britain's towns and cities, covering vast areas of urban space. Yet scientists have failed to conduct rigorous studies measuring whether these green spaces improve air quality for residents or nearby households.
Led by UEL's research team, the analysis reveals that while gardens are celebrated for their environmental benefits, the specific impact on personal air pollution exposure remains unknown. This absence of evidence is striking given how much emphasis environmental policy places on increasing green space in urban areas.
The findings highlight a research priority. Urban gardens could theoretically filter pollutants, reduce particulate matter, or serve as barriers to traffic emissions. However, without controlled studies measuring pollution levels inside and outside gardens, scientists cannot confirm whether these theoretical benefits actually translate to cleaner air for homeowners.
The scale of the oversight is substantial. Gardens represent a significant portion of urban green infrastructure in British cities. If they do reduce pollution exposure, this information should shape urban planning and public health recommendations. If they provide minimal benefit, resources might be directed elsewhere.
The University of East London team's work underscores the importance of moving beyond assumptions in environmental health research. Just because green space seems beneficial does not mean every type of green space delivers measurable health improvements in every context.
Future research needs to measure air quality metrics directly, accounting for variables like garden size, plant type, proximity to pollution sources, and weather patterns. Such studies would help determine whether residential gardens function as meaningful pollution barriers or whether their air quality benefits are largely psychological rather than physiological.
