Researchers have uncovered evidence of ritual fire practices stretching back 25,000 years in Cloggs Cave in southeastern Australia. The discovery reveals one of the longest continuous ceremonial traditions documented by archaeologists.

Scientists led by researchers at institutions studying Australian Aboriginal culture analyzed preserved plant cells found in the cave's sediment layers. These cells came from grasses that were intentionally brought into the cave and burned over thousands of years. The team identified the plants through microscopic examination of phytoliths, tiny silica structures that form within plant tissues and survive long after the plant decays.

The ritual practice continued unbroken through multiple climate cycles and cultural changes, suggesting deep spiritual or social significance to the GunaiKurnai people, the Aboriginal group whose descendants live in the region today.
