Controlled burns before major wildfires dramatically improve survival rates for giant sequoias, according to research published in Nature Communications. Scientists found that mature giant sequoias in forests treated with prescribed burns were nearly four times more likely to survive extreme wildfires compared to untreated forests.

Record-setting wildfires across California have killed close to 20 percent of mature giant sequoias in some areas. These ancient trees, among Earth's largest living organisms, face mounting threats from increasingly intense fire seasons driven by climate change and decades of fire suppression that allows dangerous fuel loads to accumulate on the forest floor.

The study demonstrates that strategic prescribed burns reduce tree mortality by clearing dead wood, undergrowth, and other flammable material. This fuel reduction allows major wildfires to move through forests with less intensity, protecting the thick-barked sequoias from lethal heat damage.

Prescribed burns work by creating a mosaic of fire intensities across the landscape. When an uncontrolled wildfire enters a previously treated forest, it encounters less fuel to consume, so flames remain lower and move faster. This reduces the duration and intensity of heat exposure that can kill even fire-adapted trees.

The research adds urgency to forest management debates in California. While prescribed burns carry operational risks and require careful planning to avoid escaping control, the data clearly show they offer one of the most effective tools for protecting giant sequoias and other forest ecosystems.

Giant sequoias occupy only about 28,000 acres in California's Sierra Nevada mountains. Their limited range and slow reproduction rates make them particularly vulnerable to extinction.
