The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has renamed polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) to polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS). The change reflects decades of medical evidence showing the condition extends far beyond the ovaries.

PCOS affected roughly 10 percent of women of reproductive age worldwide, making it one of the most common endocrine disorders. The old name proved misleading. Many patients with the diagnosis did not actually have polycystic ovaries. Meanwhile, the condition involved multiple organ systems and hormonal pathways, not just reproductive tissues.

PMOS better captures the disorder's complexity. The condition involves insulin resistance, inflammation, and dysfunction across the endocrine system. Patients experience irregular periods, fertility problems, acne, and excess hair growth. They also face elevated risks for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic complications.

The renaming carries practical weight. A more accurate name helps patients understand their diagnosis extends beyond gynecology. It encourages primary care doctors and endocrinologists to screen for metabolic complications. It also validates patient experiences. Many people with PCOS reported feeling dismissed by healthcare providers who focused narrowly on reproductive symptoms while ignoring systemic metabolic problems.

Medical organizations including the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists endorsed the new terminology. The change emerged from growing recognition that current diagnostic criteria and treatment approaches missed the condition's full scope.

Researchers have long documented PMOS's metabolic underpinnings. Hyperinsulinemia, or excess insulin in the blood, drives many symptoms. Chronic inflammation plays a central role. Genetic factors interact with environmental triggers. Yet clinical practice often lagged behind the science.
